Dental Implant Details

For some, dental implants are the perfect solution. For those looking at all options available, they should consider dental implants. We can discuss with them both the benefits and the actual procedure in placing implants.

Consisting of three separate parts, the implant is made up of the implant which is the component affixed to the bone by a screw. The second section attached to the implant is known as the abutment. This provides a supportive structure for the third and final component known as the crown. The only visible portion of the implant, the crown, can be colored to match any remaining teeth in the patient’s mouth, matching shape and size as well.

Placement Procedures

While placement takes multiple appointments, the results are second to none. The initial appointment entails the removal of decayed teeth and deep professional cleaning of the oral cavity. Once completed, the implants are screwed into place, eventually becoming fused to the surrounding bone structure, becoming permanent.

The Best Candidates

While dental implants are an excellent solution, they are not for every patient. Those candidates who have adequate bone structure and healthy oral cavities are prime candidates. There needs to be enough healthy bone mass to support the implant and the patient needs to have a good regimen of oral hygiene.

Types of Dental Implants

Even those patients who know what dental implants are, are typically unaware that there are different types of implants. While they all can provide a great solution for artificial teeth, they are used for different reasons, depending upon the patient’s needs. We can make the appropriate recommendation once we provide the patient with an assessment.

The endosteal implant is considered the most frequently utilized implant. Whether the upper or lower jaw, the endosteal implant is embedded into the bone. During the recovery process, the gum tissue will grow over the implant. Once deemed complete, the abutment is then attached to the implant. After the abutment has healed appropriately, a single artificial tooth can be attached as a crown or the implant can be used to anchor a denture or bridge.

The other type is a subperiosteal implant which is not embedded into the bone. This type is highly recommended in those cases where there is inadequate bone mass to support the implant. Metal frames are placed over the bone which eventually fuses together. Once fused, the framework is used to secure posts to it so they can anchor dental appliances.
