What Is Oil Pulling, And Is It Effective?

What Is Oil Pulling, And Is It Effective?Oil pulling is a centuries-old tradition in Asia, but recently, it has begun gaining favor here in the United States. If you have heard of the oil-pulling trend, or you have seen it on Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook, or health guru websites, you may want to know more. Here is some additional information about oil pulling, dental health, and why you should proceed with caution.

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling originated in India and is thousands of years oil. When you practice oil pulling, you swish oil around in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes each day. By swishing oil in your mouth for a few minutes each day before breakfast, when your stomach is empty, you are ridding your mouth of bacteria and other toxins. Proponents of oil pulling can discuss lots of positives. First, oil pulling is natural and doesn't have artificial chemicals or preservatives. Oil pulling allows the mouth to rid itself of bacteria with a little help. Third, oil pulling has few side effects.

Effectiveness

Before you go out and buy coconut oil or olive oil, you need additional information. First, some people have noticed issues after oil pulling, such as muscle or jaw soreness and an upset stomach if they swallow the oil rather than spitting it out. Also, if you are in midlife or older, you need to check and make sure you do not have silver amalgam fillings. That's because some silver amalgam fillings have a little mercury in them. Oil pulling tends to extract mercury along with toxins and bacteria, which can be dangerous. Research studies have been mixed on whether or not oil pulling is an effective tool in dental health.

If you are considering trying oil pulling as part of your dental regime, check with the dentist first. A dentist can advise you whether or not oil pulling is right for you.
