Planning For Your Diet Ahead Of An Oral Surgery

Posted on 3/7/2022 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
Planning For Your Diet Ahead Of An Oral SurgeryOne of the important things that you should pay attention to is the diet and foods you consume after oral surgery. Often, oral surgeries involve making incisions or cuts on soft tissues, meaning that a wound is left after the surgery. During the time the site is healing, you need to be careful to avoid harming it.

What to Eat after Oral Surgery

A day before the surgery, you should make sure that you stock up on your favorite soft foods. During the first days or weeks after surgery, you will be feeding on soft foods or liquid foods because the surgery site is still fresh and perhaps the clotting is within its early stages. You need to get foods like soup, yogurt, Jell-O, milkshakes, and smoothies ready. After surgery, when you feel good about switching from clear liquids, you can start enjoying these delicious treatments. However, make sure you start slowly and increase their consumption gradually, as you listen to the response of your operation site.

You need to resist the temptation of using a straw because it can accidentally suck or create suction and dislodge the clot that is covering the surgery site. When the clotting is dislodged, pain is likely to occur. You may also experience a condition known as “dry socket” if you had a tooth extraction.

It is also crucial to avoid smoking and do away with habits that slow the healing process. Smoking prevents blood from flowing adequately into the surgery site. As a result, it leads to delay in the healing and recovery of the site. Should you experience pain for an extended period, get back to the oral surgeon for a checkup. Sometimes, the dental specialist may schedule a follow-up appointment to see how you are doing after the surgery. Contact our oral surgery team to find out what procedures we perform. Set up your appointment.
