Typical Symptoms for Those Who Have Nighttime Bruxism

Posted on 7/26/2021 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
Typical Symptoms for Those Who Have Nighttime BruxismBruxism is a condition that causes you to clench, grind, or gnash your teeth. People with bruxism tend to unconsciously clench or grind their teeth when sleeping (sleep bruxism), or grind their teeth when awake (awake bruxism). Bruxism is widely considered to be a sleep-related disorder. Here are some symptoms of bruxism.

Teeth Grinding or Clenching

The most common sign of bruxism is the grinding or clenching of teeth. People with this condition unconsciously grind their teeth while sleeping. This activity can be loud enough to wake up a sleeping partner. Keep in mind that continued grinding of teeth can cause significant damage to your teeth. It could weaken your tooth and cause damage to the surrounding gum tissue.

Fractured Teeth

Another symptom of bruxism is fractured teeth. When you continually grind your teeth, they will become fractured, flattened, loose, or chipped. It is important to have fractured or lose teeth fixed for effective functioning. When you come to our offices with a fractured tooth, we will use appliances like dental crowns to fix them. We can also use dental fillings when necessary.

Exposed Enamel

Bruxism will also expose your tooth enamel. When you repeatedly grind or clench your teeth, you wear down your tooth enamel. With time, your enamel will be exposed and won't be able to provide the necessary protection. As a result, your tooth will be vulnerable to bacterial attacks, risking conditions like tooth decay and cavities. This underlines the importance of protecting your teeth from the effects of grinding. One way you can do so is by acquiring mouth guards from us that will prevent damage to your teeth. We will also recommend other treatment methods that will help keep your enamel in good condition. Visit our offices for more information on the symptoms of bruxism.
