Anything that goes in your mouth following oral surgery should promote recovery. When it is time to take your first drink, be mindful which beverage you choose. A good choice would be water or flavored water. If you are wanting something with more taste, reach for apple juice or Ginger Ale. Sprite or 7-up are also good choices. You can have a well-blended smoothie, but avoid fruits that have small seeds.
Drinks to Avoid
Understandably, there are drinks to avoid after oral surgery. At the top of the list is alcohol. Avoid drinking alcohol as it can hinder the healing process. Additionally, if you were prescribed any pain medications after your surgery and you consume alcohol at the same time you are taking those medications, you are putting yourself in a dangerous position. You could experience impaired motor function. Liver failure and overdose are also painful realities for those who mix alcohol and medication. Please finish using your pain medications before consuming alcohol.
Coffee is another beverage we suggest you avoid for 48 hours following an oral surgery. As the site that was treated needs to clot, having anything but cool drinks may interfere with proper healing. If you must drink coffee, consider drinking a cold brew.
One sip of an acidic drink, like lemonade or orange juice, and your body will discern quickly if that was a good idea. Drinking beverages in this category is like applying citrus to an open wound. No question that you will wait at least a week before you try that again!
Lastly, it is not a good idea to suck any beverage through a straw following oral surgery. Suction can create a vacuum that disrupts the blood from clotting, which is what you want at the surgery site. The straw could also damage the surface of the site by scraping against your gum.
