Why an Oral Surgeon Does More than Work on Your Teeth and Gums

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
Why an Oral Surgeon Does More than Work on Your Teeth and GumsWhile we offer comprehensive oral surgery services for caring for the teeth and gums, we also provide treatments that include facial enhancements or reconstructive surgeries involving the face and jaw.

Oral Surgery Treatments Used to Correct Jaw Placement or the Facial Profile

We provide implant placement for patients to prevent facial collapse and preserve the jaw bones of patients with a few teeth missing or edentulous. We also provide corrective jaw surgery to patients with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), masticatory musculoskeletal discomfort (pain while eating), or oral health conditions, such as burning mouth syndrome. Oral surgery therapy may also include the surgical repositioning of the upper and lower jaw to improve the breathing of sleep apnea patients. This process is known as a maxillomandibular osteotomy. Orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, is often suggested for patients with misaligned bites who may be undergoing orthodontic treatment at the same time.

Correcting a Patient's Facial Features and Bite - What Is Recommended

When we place implants, we usually place endosteal implants directly into the jawbone, so they can fuse with the bone and provide a good hold for restorations, such as crowns, fixed bridges, for fixed dentures. Adding the implants will allow a patient to chew or bite down without worry and fill out their facial profile. This type of dentoalveolar procedure may be performed after we perform a pre-prosthetic bone graft. This type of bone graft involves the surgical implantation of autologous bone (or bone extracted from the OMS patient). The implantation of bone material provides a solid foundation for placing dental implants or for adding an implanted hearing device, such as a cochlear implant.

We do more than extract wisdom teeth or severely damaged teeth. We also can help patients look better and improve their bite. Book an appointment today to discuss our full range of services.
