Preparing Your Child for Dental Surgery

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
Preparing Your Child for Dental SurgeryDental problems that require surgery are becoming increasingly common among children. However, early intervention is always a wise move. This is because it helps prevent bigger, more painful issues in the coming years.

At Clackamas Implant & Oral Surgery Center, Brett Sullivan, DMD, MD and work hard to ensure your kid feels at ease throughout their treatment and beyond. We have a relaxed and convenient atmosphere, and provide exceptional patient care, limiting anxiety for young patients and their parents alike.

Here are a few things we recommend you to do before your child's surgery. This helps prepare them for the treatment and ensures a smooth day for everyone.

Talk to Them

Briefly explain to your child what they should expect ahead of the surgery. Try visiting the clinic with them a few times before the surgery to increase their familiarity with the place and the dental staff. Usually, doing a role play at home can help alleviate anxiety as well. This is a particularly good idea for toddlers and kids who are afraid of dentists or needles.

The Morning of the Surgery

You need to be mindful of what your child eats and drinks before the surgery. Generally, they should have a light breakfast. If the procedure requires your kid to be under general anesthesia (complete sedation), your surgeon will tell you what they should and shouldn't eat. In procedures requiring sedation, patients typically need to fast for a certain period. Your surgeon will tell you when your child should stop eating and drinking.

Things to Bring Along

It's a good idea to bring along your child's favorite toy or blanket on the day of the surgery. Reading them their favorite book during the procedure can help divert attention as they become engrossed in the story. Moreover, we recommend both parents to accompany their kid on the surgery day. Or have a friend or family member drive you home so you can sit with your kid and monitor them on the way back.

At Clackamas Implant & Oral Surgery Center, we are committed to taking care of your child's dental health needs in a friendly, comfortable and painless way. To schedule an appointment with us, call us at (503) 652-8080 today.
