Symptoms Your Jaw Pain Is More Serious

Posted on 1/11/2021 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
Symptoms Your Jaw Pain Is More SeriousWhile some people experience a sore jaw from time to time, others may experience pain on a recurring basis. Therefore, it helps to understand the symptoms associated with jaw pain that are considered more serious.

The Reasons for Jaw Pain

Jaw pain can signify a toothache or something more serious, such as TMJ or a heart attack. Temporomandibular joints connect the jaw to the skull. These joints, located in front of the ears, are also used to open and close your mouth. The jaw also holds the gums and teeth, which are subject to pressure, hot and cold, or infection. While myofascial pain, a pinched trigeminal nerve, or tooth sensitivity can cause jaws to ache or get sore, the most common source is a TMJ disorder. Any jaw pain should be assessed to detect the underlying reason for the pain. A TMJ disorder may result from an injury to the jaw, an illness (such as arthritis), teeth grinding, misalignment, or muscular inflammation.

When Jaw Pain Becomes an Emergency

Jaw pain, related to a heart attack, is often accompanied by a shooting pain in the left arm or a pain between the shoulder blades. If you experience these accompanying symptoms, you need to contact a doctor immediately. Also, TMD (temporomandibular disorder) can signify a serious dental problem. If the pain is so great that it interferes with your daily activities, you should have it checked without delay.

Do you currently experience jaw pain? If so, you need to contact us about it now. As noted, the pain may come from a dental issue, such as teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism) or may be due to dental decay or even an infection. By knowing the reasons for the pain, we can determine the best course for treatment. Let us determine the reason for any jaw soreness or pain. Give us a call now to schedule an appointment for a consultation.
