Reasons We Have to Split Some Teeth to Remove Them

Posted on 5/20/2019 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
Reasons We Have to Split Some Teeth to Remove ThemThe idea of a tooth extraction is something most people are familiar with. If there is something wrong with a tooth, our dentists will come in and pull it out. Some may think that pulling a tooth involves the use of some pliers and a little effort. They do not realize that we have different ways to removing teeth. One of those ways involves splitting the teeth to help remove them. There are a variety of reasons that this is the preferred option in some cases.

The Reason for Extraction

The goal of extracting a tooth is to remove a tooth that is causing harm. There are plenty of reasons for a person to have a tooth pulled. Impacted wisdom teeth are a common reason. Diseased teeth also may require extraction. Some people need to remove teeth that are creating problems for other teeth. People that break a tooth may need to have it pulled.

Why Split a Tooth

When a tooth is pulled, the best-case scenario allows us to remove the who tooth at one time. This leaves the cleanest possible surgical site and makes recovery from the extraction easier. There are times when this is not possible. Impacted wisdom teeth are not always easily accessible. Splitting the tooth to remove it in as big a piece as possible is one reason for splitting a tooth.

A more common reason for splitting a tooth for extraction is when a tooth is already broken. A tooth with a crack in tit may not always allow for removal as a single piece. It is better to complete the crack than it is to have it crack on its own during the extraction. The last reason for splitting a tooth for extraction is the position it is in. Splitting a tooth that is close to another tooth may offer the best solution in some cases.

As dental professionals we choose the method for extraction that offers the best possible results. If that means splitting a tooth, that is what we will do. For more information about this or any other oral health issues, contact our office to schedule an appointment.
