What to Avoid Right After Getting a Bone Graft

People who have lost their teeth for some time usually suffer from jawbone atrophy. When this happens, dental implants would be impossible to carry out unless a bone tissue is transplanted into the mouth to grow bone.

This procedure of building bone necessary to complete a dental implant procedure is called bone grafting. While it may seem like a serious and complicated process, bone grafting is a routine procedure that can be carried out immediately and painlessly.

Do's and Don'ts After Bone Grafting

There are many things that should be avoided immediately after a bone grafting procedure to ensure outstanding results. For one, the wound of the surgery should never be touched either using the finger or the tongue.

Rinsing and spitting are also not allowed for the next two days after the procedure so that blood clotting can do its job of keeping you from losing too much blood.

Smoking should also be strictly avoided because cigarettes contain nicotine that acts as a vasoconstrictor (causes the narrowing of the blood vessels) that can limit the amount of blood supply in the bone graft area.

When this happens, the surgery site will not have enough nutrients and oxygen that can facilitate healing. Toxins can also build up in the surgery area since smaller blood vessels cannot discard toxins and waste effectively resulting in infection.

To help ease the discomfort, on the other hand, ice packs should be placed on the face along the surgery location and over-the-counter pain reliever and prescribed medications should be taken on time.

If you have lost all your teeth for some time now and you wanted to get dental implants to replace them, but your jawbone had already deteriorated due to lack of teeth, you should visit us so we can assess the possibility of bone grafting or other suitable procedure.
