There are many conditions that may require oral surgery such as tooth replacement with dental implants, removal of impacted wisdom teeth, correction of jaw irregularities to properly fit dentures, serious cases of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), and many others.

From among the disorders in the list, one of the most common is oral surgery for wisdom teeth extraction. Records show that, in the United States alone, 5 million people go to surgery each year remove their wisdom teeth or third molars.

Note that while this dental procedure is common and completed in less than two hours, patients should still observe proper post-operative practices.

Pointers to Consider After Oral Surgery

If you are set to undergo a wisdom teeth oral surgery, you need to know the things you should and should not do after the procedure has been carried out so that you will recover faster and without complications.

For one, you should have somebody to pick you up and accompany you after surgery, especially if you opt to be asleep during the procedure. It would be unsafe for you to drive yourself home afterward since your alertness, vision, and overall coordination would be compromised for several hours.

In fact, it is best that you don't operate any type of machinery after the extraction procedure, at least for the first 24 hours. While it is okay for you to eat after an hour, you should only consume soft foods for the first 24 hours after the procedure.

To ensure that your gums will heal well, you should also refrain from taking hot and spicy foods and drinks as well as drinking from a straw, at least for the first 24 hours also.

You should also take your medication on time and avoid unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. If you want to know more information about oral surgery, call our office immediately and we will be glad to assist you.
