People exercising after appointment at Clackamas Implant & Oral Surgery Center in Clackamas, ORMaxillofacial surgery in itself does not have any effect on your weight. The procedure is very minor and does not involve significant weight change. However, your diet and lifestyle changes after the procedure could cause weight loss. After jaw surgery, several issues can make eating more difficult. These include limited jaw movement, swelling, pain, drooling, numbness in the lips and mouth, and changes in your ability to taste. As a result, you might lose weight.

How to Avoid Weight Loss Post Surgery

To avoid losing weight, prepare yourself for the new diet. Since you will be on a fluid and puree diet after your surgery, you will need a blender or liquidizer to prepare your meals. It is a good idea to practice using these before your surgery. You will also need a plastic syringe, a small spoon, and a large flexible straw. Additionally, have a bathroom scale handy to track your weight. Record your current weight and check it every few days after the surgery.

Get a Proper Diet From Your Surgeon

Right after your surgery, you will receive fluids through an IV, and your surgeon will let you know when you can start drinking water. Swallowing will be difficult at first but should improve within a few days. Using a straw or a large syringe will help you drink during this time. You can start having soups and milkshakes once you get past this initial phase.

Introduce Soft Foods on Time

You can begin introducing soft foods once you can open and close your mouth more easily. Use a blender or liquidizer to puree your food. Ensure to cook foods until tender and blend them with plenty of liquid, such as milk, cream, soups, or fruit juice.

Eat Healthy Solid Foods in Time

Your surgeon will tell you when to eat solid foods during your first post-operative check-up. When the time comes for solid foods, stick to a healthy diet. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and proteins to restore your weight.
