Special care is needed for patients with diabetes, a metabolic disease that can cause complications after or during a routine tooth extraction. High blood sugar can negatively affect the response of the body to inflammation. Further, blood sugar affects blood flow and could cause severe bleeding. These are part of the reasons why diabetic patients must be managed properly to reduce severe risks during dental surgery. Below are tips for managing diabetic patients during tooth extractions.

Blood Sugar Management

The first step to protect diabetic patients from emergencies is to control their blood sugar. Before the extraction, all diabetic patients must undergo blood sugar regulation. The surgeon must suggest drugs and lifestyle patterns to help balance the blood sugar. You may be required to take blood sugar balance medications for at least two weeks before the surgery.

Blood Flow Control

Excessive blood flow is one of the significant emergencies likely to occur during tooth extraction. The situation is more common for diabetic patients. High blood sugar may affect the normal clotting of blood, which may result in excessive blood flow post-surgery. To prevent this, surgeons must monitor the patient closely for a few hours after the surgery. The region where surgery was performed should also be sealed to avoid further blood flow.

Time Management During the Surgery

The other key concern should be the time required to perform the surgery. Diabetic patients may undergo most dental surgeries because they are minor and do not take much time. Even so, the surgeon must be careful not to take too long since there could be excessive bleeding.

The key to successful dental surgeries for diabetic patients is dealing with the right surgeon. Your surgeon should first ask about your diabetic condition to be able to serve you right. If you have diabetes and need dental surgery, talk to our expert surgeon who deals with diabetic patients. Email or call our office for more information.
