Sedation Types Used in Oral Surgery Procedures

The level of sedation can range from minimal to deep, depending on the procedure and the needs of the patient. Oral surgeons have several sedation techniques to choose from.

Minimal Sedation

Minimal sedation uses medication to induce relaxation while keeping you entirely awake and able to respond. It typically involves an anti-anxiety medication like Halcion taken by mouth before the procedure. You will remain comfortable, relaxed, and aware.

Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation and pain control while you are awake. It is induced by intravenous (IV) medications, most commonly by combining a mild sedative like Versed with an opioid pain medication such as fentanyl. You remain conscious but quite tired.

Deep Sedation

Deep sedation is similar to moderate sedation but produces an even deeper state of relaxation. Higher doses of IV sedatives like propofol or sevoflurane gas achieve a level just short of general anesthesia. You are in a deep sleep but can still respond to stimulation.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia induces complete unconsciousness, as in a deep sleep. Powerful anesthesia medications are administered by IV or by inhaled gases. This is used for the most complex oral surgery cases.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia like novocaine is always given to numb the surgical site regardless of the sedation level used. This prevents any sensation of pain in the area operated on. Sedation medications are used more for relaxation and anxiety relief.

Individualized Sedation Approach

The sedation method depends on factors like the procedure complexity, estimated time, and your health history. Your oral surgeon will select the optimal level of sedation to keep you comfortable, relaxed, and pain-free during your oral surgery. The goal is for you to feel as comfortable as possible throughout the process.

Discuss any questions or preferences you have regarding sedation with your oral surgeon. They can explain the options and recommend the best approach to suit your needs. The right amount of sedation will allow you to undergo oral surgery with peace of mind.
