Preventive Measures in Oral Surgery

Posted on 7/1/2024 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
Dentist discussing oral surgery with patient at Clackamas Implant & Oral Surgery Center in Clackamas, OROral surgery involves operating on the mouth, jaws, teeth, or other areas like the face and neck. It is done by oral surgeons who focus on treating issues related to dental and facial parts. While oral surgery is safe, taking steps before the procedure can help avoid problems and support healing. This article explores preventive measures to take before oral surgery.

Stop Smoking

If you smoke, try to stop smoking at least two weeks before surgery and during recovery. Smoking slows down healing and increases the risk of complications like dry sockets after tooth removal. Quitting smoking, even temporarily, can benefit wound healing after oral surgery.

Good Oral Health

Practicing good oral hygiene before surgery helps decrease bacterial growth in the mouth. Brush twice and floss once daily. Schedule a dental cleaning if you have not had one in the past six months. Healthy gums and teeth before surgery can prevent infection.

Nutrition

Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C and zinc. Vitamin C aids wound healing, while zinc boosts immunity. Avoid alcohol one week before and 24 hours after surgery, as it can heighten bleeding risks. Stay hydrated by drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Proper nutrition supports healing.

Medications

Discuss all medicines you take with your oral surgeon. Blood thinners, aspirin, and anti-inflammatories can increase bleeding. Your surgeon may advise stopping this one week before surgery. Never stop medications without medical guidance. Tell your surgeon about supplements, too.

Medical History

Inform your oral surgeon of any health conditions, especially those that delay healing, like diabetes. Mention allergies and any prior complications with anesthesia or oral surgery. Providing a full medical history allows your surgeon to minimize surgical risks.

Taking preventive steps before oral surgery, like quitting smoking and disclosing medical history, can help avoid issues and encourage proper healing after the procedure. Contact our office today to learn more about preparing for your upcoming oral surgery.
