The Relationship Between Bulimia And Dental Health

Posted on 9/25/2023 by Clackamas Oral Surgery
The Relationship Between Bulimia And Dental HealthBulimia nervosa is the name of an eating disorder that causes you to binge and purge. In simple terms, it causes you to eat large amounts of food at a time and get rid of it. The exact cause of the disorder is unknown; however, it may be due to genetic factors and learned behaviors.

This disorder is a pattern that is characterized by binging and purging, eating very little or fasting, excessively exercising, and hiding food to purge later. People with bulimia are healthy and normal. They, however, judge themselves based on their weight and body shape. This causes self-esteem issues linked to their body.

Effects on dental health

Due to poor eating behaviors, bulimia can have diverse effects on a person's dental health. One of the most common effects is dental erosion. Due to the frequent exposure to stomach acids, the tooth enamel might start to erode. The enamel is the protective cover of the teeth, which means that erosion of the enamel exposes the dentin and exposes the teeth to cavities and tooth sensitivity. It may also lead to tooth discoloration that can over time cause severe effects leading to tooth extractions.

Also, the exposure of the mouth to stomach acids may cause damage to the soft tissues and gums. The throat and palate may also be affected causing inflammation, infections, and soreness. Moreover, it can lead to xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth. This means that it reduces the saliva flow. Saliva is very important and crucial in maintaining the oral health and strength of the teeth. It neutralizes acids in the mouth and washes away particles on the surface of the teeth. A reduced saliva flow can lead to an influx of bacteria in the mouth causing issues such as gingivitis and periodontal diseases.
