How is Aspirin so dangerous to your Gums?

Posted on 3/20/2023 by Clackamas Oral Surgery Office
How is Aspirin so dangerous to your Gums? When you have discomfort in your teeth, gums, or mouth in general, you should never put aspirin anywhere near your gums. If you have ever experienced unbearable pain anywhere in your mouth, we recommend that you consult us so that we can advise you on the best pain-relieving medication to take. That being stated, let's unearth more about aspirin and why it's not safe to use on your gums.

Aspirin burns your Gums

The major reason that aspirin is harmful to your health is that it can chemically burn your gums. It not only does not ease your pain, but it also adds another one to the mix that you will have to cope with.

Some individuals mistakenly assume that mixing aspirin into a paste will make it work better, while others feel that pressing it straight into the gum will work best. Neither of those ways works.

Aspirin's scientific name is Acetylsalicylic Acid, which signifies that it is an acid. Acids burn your tissue, including your gums, mouth, and even your teeth, as you may recall from high school chemistry.

Ibuprofen is a better Option

If you want an over-the-counter medication that actually works, we recommend Ibuprofen. It is not an acid, it soothes pain and inflammation, and it is completely harmless for your teeth, gums, and mouth. In fact, if you're taking aspirin, you should avoid taking any Ibuprofen at all since the two can be dangerous if combined. We recommend that you avoid using it if you have taken Ibuprofen at all costs.

Finally, if you have a toothache, we urge that you come to our offices so that we may examine it. A pain reliever will only give brief relief. If you want a more lasting remedy, come in and let our doctors look at it.
