 Orthognathic surgery or corrective jaw surgery involves the movement of the upper, lower, or both jawbones. The jaws are moved in, out, up, or down to achieve a more balanced bite and facial appearance.
Orthognathic surgery is required when teeth and jaws don't line up correctly. Breathing, Speech, sleep apnea, gum health, and facial balance can all be improved by realigning the jaws so that the teeth properly contact (occlude), improving jaw joint function and chewing capacity.
Who Makes a Good Orthognathic Surgery Candidate?
Not everyone who has a jaw issue has to have orthognathic surgery. People who have an incorrect bite or jaws that are placed wrongly might benefit from orthognathic surgery. Jaw development happens gradually; in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may not line up after the process. Damage to the jaw during growth may cause discrepant growth of the jaws. The outcome may lead to various issues that may impair speech, chewing ability, long-term dental health, and outward appearance.
Just shifting the teeth can result in periodontal issues, recurrence of orthodontic motions, jaw joint issues, and poor or even disastrous face aesthetics when trying to correct misaligned jaws.
Braces May Be Necessary
Most orthognathic surgeries necessitate braces on the patient before the procedure. Before having surgery, this procedure is used to correct and level your teeth. Therefore, you won't need braces if your teeth are completely aligned.
Treatment plan
Once your braces are removed, your orthodontist and oral and maxillofacial surgeon will work together to create a personalized treatment plan based on the state of your teeth. As part of the process, models, photos, and x-rays of your teeth could be taken. Orthodontists may advise shaping the teeth or crowning them.
You could also need computer-guided treatment plans, 3-dimensional CT scans, or temporary orthodontic anchoring devices as part of your orthognathic surgery therapy. Additionally, these procedures could shorten the time you need to wear braces and stop your teeth from moving.
