Wisdom teeth are notorious for causing discomfort, impaction, infection, and crowding. While extraction is often the best course of action, pregnant patients may wonder: is it safe to remove wisdom teeth during pregnancy?

Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes—wisdom teeth can be safely removed during pregnancy if medically necessary. However, unless the tooth is infected or causing severe pain, many providers will recommend waiting until after childbirth. The decision ultimately depends on the stage of pregnancy and the urgency of treatment.

Best Time to Remove Wisdom Teeth During Pregnancy

The second trimester (weeks 13–27) is generally considered the safest window for dental surgery. Here’s why:

  • First Trimester: Crucial fetal development is underway, so most elective procedures are avoided.
  • Second Trimester: A safer time for both mother and baby; the risk of complications is lower.
  • Third Trimester: Lying back in the dental chair can be uncomfortable, and the risk of preterm labor is slightly increased.

In emergency cases, such as significant infection, swelling, or unrelenting pain, wisdom tooth extraction may still be performed in the first or third trimester with proper precautions.

Important Precautions for Pregnant Patients

If extraction during pregnancy is necessary, special care is taken to protect both mother and baby:

  • Use of a lead apron during any necessary X-rays
  • Limiting radiographs to those absolutely essential for diagnosis
  • Careful selection of pregnancy-safe anesthesia, antibiotics, and pain medications

Your oral surgeon will work closely with your OB-GYN to ensure your treatment plan aligns with your prenatal care.

Can the Procedure Be Postponed?

Yes, if the wisdom tooth is not causing immediate complications, conservative management such as antibiotics and pain relief may be recommended until after pregnancy. Once you’ve delivered, your oral surgeon can reevaluate and proceed with extraction in a more flexible setting.
