Things to Know Prior to Oral Cancer SurgeryInformation on how an oral cancer surgery is going to progress, what to expect, post-operative procedures, and nutrition can put a subject in a better frame of mind to deal with the events to follow.

What are Some Important Things to Know Before Oral Cancer Surgery?

Before the operation, you will be checked for any possible allergic reactions to the drugs that will be administered. Your health parameters will be assessed for a smooth recovery after the surgery. Blood tests, ECG, and breathing tests are some tests that you may have to undertake.

You will undergo pre-assessment seven to fifteen days before the surgery. This is an opportunity for you to meet members of the surgical team that will operate on you. You can ask them questions to clear any doubts that you may have.

You will learn about the nature of the surgery, it's benefits, and possible risks. You will also be briefed about the way forward. If the process involves a tracheostomy, you will be informed accordingly. The nurse assigned to you will help you cope with the pre and post-operative procedures.

The dietician will play a very important role in your recuperation. You will learn about how the surgery will affect your eating habits. You will gain useful information on how to increase nutrients and calorific intake. Physiotherapists work alongside doctors to monitor your recovery and ensure that you can move around as freely as the situation permits.

If the surgery has affected your speech, then a speech and language therapist will help you practice communication after the procedure. If you're a smoker, you will be encouraged by your surgeon to quit smoking as early as possible.

The significance of the aspects of oral cancer surgery may vary with the person. We can help you understand all those issues that are of importance in your individual case. Get in touch with us to learn more.
