Important Ways to Decrease Sleep Apnea Risk Factors

Posted on 9/10/2019 by Clackamas Oral Surgery Office
Important Ways to Decrease Sleep Apnea Risk FactorsMany people worry that they may suffer from sleep apnea. They worry that they have some symptoms of the problem or that they are doing things that could lead to problems with sleep apnea.

While it is not possible for everyone to avoid the problem of sleep apnea, there are some things you can do that would increase the risk factors associated with the condition. Making some changes could mean you will get a good night's sleep without any fear of sleep apnea.

The Risk Factors You Control

When it comes to sleep apnea, there are some risk factors you can control and some you can't do much to change. You do not have control over your family history, and you may not do much if you have a narrow airway. Males are at a higher risk and the issues with sleep apnea are more common as you get older.

What you do control is things such as excess weight which is one of the biggest risk factors for sleep apnea. Other risk factors in your control include smoking, drinking of alcohol and nasal congestion. Making changes in any of these areas can decrease the risk of sleep apnea.

It is also possible that changing the position you sleep in can help. Sleeping on the side is much better than sleeping on the back for people who suffer from sleep apnea.

Treatments for Sleep Apnea

For some people changing their habits is not enough. They need some way to treat the sleep apnea to reduce the dangers from the condition. Treatments can range from a machine that exerts positive pressure while you sleep to oral appliances that help keep your airway open.

Sleep apnea can cause problems if left untreated. Taking some steps to change the bad habits that can lead to sleep apnea can help reduce the risks from both the apnea and other health issues.
