You May Be Struggling with Sleep Apnea and Be Totally UnawareSleep apnea is a serious problem. People with sleep apnea go through periods where they are not breathing as they sleep. This is a dangerous situation and is something that anyone suffering from sleep apnea needs to address.

The problem is that it is difficult to know that you stop breathing while you are sleeping if you are asleep. For that reason, there are plenty of people who are not aware they have a problem with sleep apnea.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

The first thing that people have to know if they want to figure out if they have sleep apnea is the symptoms of the condition. The symptoms can fall into two categories. The symptoms that you will notice yourself and the symptoms that someone else can tell you about. These are some of the symptoms that you may notice yourself.

•  Waking up gasping for air - If you stop breathing for long enough, you may wake up out of breath.
•  Insomnia or difficulty sleeping - Sleep apnea can make it difficult for you to fall completely asleep.
•  Headaches in the morning - Not breathing while you sleep can lead to headaches when you wake up.
•  Irritability - When you don't get a good night's rest, you can become more irritable.
•  Dry mouth - Sleep apnea can cause a dry mouth when you wake up.

In addition to these symptoms that you can recognize, there are a few symptoms that someone else can tell you about.

•  Loud snoring - People with sleep apnea will often suffer from snoring that can keep the whole neighborhood awake.
•  Periods where you are not breathing - Even if you don't wake up, someone else may notice periods when you are not breathing as you sleep.

These symptoms may signal that you have a problem with sleep apnea, but there is also a way to find out for sure.

Sleep Apnea Testing

The testing for sleep apnea involves testing while you sleep. The testing uses machines that record your breathing while you sleep. It can detect the times when you stop breathing and determine the severity of the problem you have.
