Times Where Jaw Reconstruction Surgery May Be the Best Option for Oral HealthThere are times when problems with the jaw may require a little more than orthodontic treatment. From time to time, we see patients who need orthognathic surgery, also known simply as jaw surgery.

But why would you need it? There are several reasons, the most common being a condition that requires corrective surgery as a result of abnormal jaw growth. Usually, these conditions are inherited. Other reasons for jaw reconstruction surgery may include facial injury or even severe arthritis of the temporomandibular joint.

Why You May Need Orthognathic Surgery

After you come in for a consultation with our skilled staff, we may indicate that you are a good candidate for orthognathic surgery if you are experiencing one of the following conditions: Difficulty with biting, chewing or swallowing your food, chronic jaw pain caused by either bilateral TMJ or unilateral pain caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, facial imbalance caused by under bite, overbite, cross bite or a deficient chin. Jaw surgery may even be recommended as a treatment for sleep apnea.

Jaw surgery can correct irregularities of the jaw bone and can be helpful in realigning the teeth and jaw which will improve your overall oral health and the way your jaw works. Not only can it correct irregularities, it can improve your facial appearance.
