How We Come Up with an Oral Cancer Treatment Plan

How We Come Up with an Oral Cancer Treatment PlanA diagnosis of oral cancer is scary, but it does not mean a person should give up on their life. Instead, it means that a person should take some time to come up with a treatment plan.

It may surprise people to find out that they have different options to help them in their battle against oral cancer. The treatment plan will depend on how early they detect the cancer, the type of cancer and the location of the cancer.

The Start of All treatment Plans

Before treating cancer, it is very important to learn as much as possible about it. That means performing imaging, blood and other tests to determine what stage of cancer it is, where it is and if it has spread to other parts of the body. That information can help determine both the treatment and the long-term plan for dealing with the cancer.

Treatment Options

The good news is that there are options for treating oral cancer. The first option is usually surgery to remove the tumor. The hope is that the cancer has not spread, and that surgery can completely remove it. For people that catch the cancer in the early stages, this is the only treatment they may need.
If more aggressive treatment is necessary, radiation and chemotherapy are an option. Nutrition and targeted therapies are other options.

The one thing we tell everyone as we develop a plan of treatment is to maintain good oral hygiene habits. That can help speed up recovery and can prevent more problems in the future. It also makes it easier for us to track the progression of the condition throughout the course of treatment.
